NYELA at Gloria Molina Grand Park

What it is

NYELA is the free New Year’s Eve party at Gloria Molina Grand Park, the park that runs from the Music Center down to City Hall in Downtown. The organizers call it the biggest free New Year’s Eve celebration on the West Coast. For the countdown to 2026, it ran from 8pm to 1am with two music stages, and at midnight a projection show was shown on the front of City Hall.

Is it happening in 2026?

When we checked in late October 2026, the park’s NYELA page still showed last year’s event, and a 2026 to 2027 edition had not been announced. It has been held in recent years, but confirm on the Grand Park site before you plan around it. We will update this guide when details are out.

What to know if it runs

Based on last year’s rules:

  • Entry was free with no ticket needed, and the park asked people to RSVP online. The organizers warned that anyone selling tickets is not legitimate.
  • It was open to all ages, and pets were welcome.
  • Guests entered through three marked entrances with a bag check.
  • Bags larger than a standard backpack, coolers, folding or metal chairs, outside alcohol and open bottles, including water, were not allowed. Water fountains and drinks for sale were available inside.

Getting there

The park is next to Civic Center/Grand Park station on the B and D Lines. The A and E Lines stop at Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill and Historic Broadway, both a short walk away. Driving into Downtown on New Year’s Eve means street closures and full garages, so take the train.

Rose Parade camping in Pasadena

For a very different night, join the families who camp along the Rose Parade route. The 138th Rose Parade starts at 8am on January 1, 2027. The City of Pasadena’s rules:

  • Spectators can claim a spot on the sidewalk from noon on December 31.
  • Everyone must stay on the curb until 11pm, when they can move out to the blue Honor Line.
  • Overnight camping is allowed only on the night of December 31.
  • Tents, sofas and boxes for seats are not allowed, and unoccupied chairs are removed.
  • Small raised barbecues are allowed with a fire extinguisher, but bonfires are illegal.
  • Throwing objects is prohibited, and selling or giving away horns on the route is illegal.

Colorado Boulevard closes to cars at 10pm on December 31. The Metro A Line stops at Del Mar, Memorial Park, Lake and Allen stations, all within half a mile of the route. Nights are cold, so bring warm layers, hats and gloves. Our Rose Parade guide has seats, parking and Floatfest.

Theme parks

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort runs from November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027, so the parks are still decorated on New Year’s Eve. It is one of the busiest days of the year in Anaheim. You need a dated ticket and a park reservation, and hours for December 31 are posted on the park calendar closer to the date. Read our Disneyland guide before you book. For Universal Studios Hollywood, check the park calendar for New Year’s Eve hours; see our Universal guide.

Bars, rooftops and clubs

Most bars, hotel rooftops and clubs sell New Year’s Eve tickets or packages. Downtown, Hollywood and West Hollywood have the biggest concentration. A few tips:

  • Buy ahead. Popular rooftops and clubs sell out, and door prices are often higher.
  • Read what is included. Some tickets cover drinks or food, others only entry.
  • Plan your route home before midnight. Rideshare surge pricing is common right after midnight.

Quieter ways to ring it in

Not everyone wants a crowd. Some ideas:

  • Book dinner. Many restaurants run set menus on New Year’s Eve; reserve early. Our best restaurants in Los Angeles guide is a good start.
  • Watch the city lights from a viewpoint in the early evening, then head home. Check closing times first, since many parks close at night.
  • See holiday lights earlier in the week. Note that L.A. Zoo Lights is closed on New Year’s Eve. See our Christmas lights guide.
  • Stay in and catch the Rose Parade on TV the next morning.

Where to stay

If you plan to celebrate Downtown, a hotel within walking distance of Grand Park saves you the ride home. For the Rose Parade, Pasadena hotels book up early, so look at places near an A Line station, which connects Downtown and Pasadena. Book early either way, since rooms fill up around the holiday. Our where to stay in Los Angeles guide compares neighborhoods.

Getting home safely

For the countdown to 2026, Metro made rides free on New Year’s Eve and ran several rail lines through the night. Metro has not announced plans for this year as of late October 2026, so check metro.net in December. Our LA Metro guide covers lines and fares.

New Year’s Eve checklist

  • Confirm event details for 2026; several were not announced when we checked.
  • Take the train or book a ride home in advance.
  • Carry a layer. Nights are cool, especially in Pasadena.
  • Leave large bags at home if you are going to a public event with bag checks.
  • Keep an eye on fire rules. Personal fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.
